I accidentally opened some folder on Desktop. I have hundreds of stacked folders on the desktop. I created a new folder, select all and moved to a folder. It has 2000+ files in it and my desktop is still covered in files . I don't know where the files belong. Where do I start?

Simply use Time Machine to restore the Desktop to an earlier time than when you goofed up.

Do you use Time Machine?
Might just be easier to nuke it from orbit and restore a backup from before you did that.
