Keyboard Keys not working but work when shift is pressed

I have a bizarre issue where certain keys on the built-in mac book keyboard won't work when pressed but they do work when I press shift and that key. The affected keys are 1QAZ, the keys that go diagonally down the left side of a keyboard. It seems like a software issue but not sure how to troubleshoot and run any diagnostics.
