Macbook Pro apparently thinks external display is internal display

MacBook M3 Pro 14" from Nov 2023, Sequoia 15.5.

I've been using the MBP with two external displays and the lid open (to have three displays total) without any issues.

Yesterday, without any warning, it's like the power on my internal display was turned off. Of course, immediate thought, hardware failure.

BUT

The screen is grey, not black, and when I reboot I can see it go from black to dark grey.

If I play with display settings, my Mac sees that I have three displays but behaves as if I have only two. If I set the internal display as the main display, the settings apply to the external display.

I shut down as normal last night. This morning, I had forgotten about the issue, opened the lid, and my internal display was working. But soon as the MBP finished waking up and registered the other two displays, it went dark again. I have tried disconnecting everything and rebooting, still get the dark screen. Plug in the external displays and I'm asked to log in on one of them when the main display with the log in should be the internal.

I haven't been able to get into disk utility because of the lack of internal display function.

I do have Apple Care, but I'm in Mexico and it can take 2 weeks to get a diagnostic, never mind a repair. This is my work computer (self-employed) and I will have to wait until my next vacation this fall to be able to take it in.

Help? :)

Thanks,

Rae

What make and model are the external displays..?

How is each display connected to the MacBook Pro..?

If both displays are connected to a Dock, check to see if the Dock manufacture has a firmware update.

Or test with one display on the dock and the other display on the HDMI port if possible.

If one display is connected to Thunderbolt/USB-C port and one display is connected to the HDMI port.

Try switching things around to see if the problem follows a port, cable or display.

if you invoke "mirror displays", you can get one of the external displays to have the same picture that would have been shown on the built-in display.

That gets you back the menubar and the ability to launch Apps like Disk Utility and reconfigure things to your liking.

If you can't get to Settings, the shortcut:

Command-BrightnessDown

...is supposed to toggle the sense of "mirror displays"

Yesterday, booting up without anything connected got me my display. Today, it does not, so I'm assuming it's dead. It does go from shiny black (off) to more like a matte grey and I could see the ghost of the Apple logo in the middle as it booted, but otherwise, there's nothing to see. Only the change from black to grey tells me display is on versus off.

My issue is with the recovery disk utility that comes at startup that gives me access to diagnostics. I have an external display plugged directly into the computer (the other one is daisy chained through a hub), but my Mac won't connect and display on those until it has completely started up.

When I'm in my computer working, I have access to all menus I need.

I'm not going to waste any more of any one else's time about this since I'm not getting a display anymore while disconnected, like I did yesterday. So I think that eliminates the external displays, hubs, and cables as issues. I've made an appointment with tech support tomorrow night to hopefully get a quick diagnostic (I'm an eternal optimist) and then determine how I'll proceed. Thanks, all!
