Can't play music from network drive

I have two MacBooks on my table:

1.) MacBook Air running macOS 12.7.6 (and cannot upgrade further) and has my music library on an attached USB drive which is shared on the network. Signed in with my home Apple account.

2.) MacBook Pro running macOS 15.5. Signed in with my work Apple account. Two different accounts means that I can't use Media Sharing.

I can successfully mount the network share on machine #2. I can copy files from it and play them locally in the Music app, but I cannot play them in the Music app if I leave them on the network share. I CAN preview the audio in the Finder's Get Info window from the network share, though. This all worked as intended two weeks ago, and I don't think there have been updates to system software or network configuration in that time. Does this have a hope of working?
