Should I convert heic to jpg as I can't open iphone heic photos in windows pc

All my iphone photos are saved in .HEIC by default. I first noticed about this fact when connecting my iPhone 16 Pro to my Windows PC. All images ends with .heic extension in Windows 11 file explorer. I need to make some editing and the photos app and editing apps does not support HEIC images.

Should I convert heic to jpg so I can easily view and edit in Windows?

If you need quick access and editing: Converting to JPG is recommended. If you want to keep high quality and original format: You might consider keeping HEIC and using compatible viewers or converters when needed, but this adds complexity.

How to convert HEIC to JPG?

  1. Offline tools: Use free software like Windows Photos app, 1rfanView, or XnV1ew.
  2. Online converters: Use trusted online services (be cautious about privacy).
  3. Built-in Windows 11 support: Windows 11 now includes support for HEIC/HEIF if you install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, allowing you to view HEIC files directly without conversion.

Converting HEIC to JPG on Windows PC is generally pretty safe — I’ve done it myself plenty of times without any issues. Just a heads-up though: No real danger in doing it as long as you’re using reputable tools or apps. Usually, it’s just a matter of choosing the right software or online converter, and you'll be good.

From my own experience, I’ve noticed that some free online converters can be a bit sketchy, or sometimes they might add watermarks or ads, so I prefer using trusted apps like Windows’ built-in Photos app or reliable third-party programs to convert HEIC to JPG.

All that applies to a Mac, too! Personally, I stay away from online apps unless I really have nothing to lose. Clearly, though, there are online services from fully reliable companies. Nonetheless…

HEIC is a newer and better format really

there are tons of apps that show the images in that format for both macos and windows

a good one for windows is Irfanview it's pretty much the vlc player but for images it display everything really

Agree, I don’t have an issue viewing HEIC photos on my windows device so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong… or right. Thanks for your input. 🙂
