Serial missing on iPad A16 - what do enterprises do?

I may have missed something. But how am I supposed to release a dead A16 iPad from Apple Business if I can't find the serial number on the device?

We have thousands of iPads registered to as many employees spread over hundreds of divisions with their own budgets. Quite often, broken devices are delivered to us in mixed boxes. There is no way to find the invoice for any particular iPad once it cannot turn on.

Why Apple? Why would you do this?

Many (if not the majority) of large or not large Enterprises affix their own serialised Asset Label to IT and other equipment - this usually being linked to a database of capital assets that will include device information and associated hardware identifiers.

If you are experiencing difficulty with asset management, perhaps you should entertain (or at least suggest to your organisation) that you do so too.
