How to prevent duplicate photos?

Hi

After syncing photos from my iPhone with Photos on my MacBook I get duplicates. Which I can merge with the Duplicates utility in Photos. Photos are from a long time ago, since then I already did many syncs with that iPhone.

How can I prevent duplicates?

I have nothing to do with iCloud, I don't use it. Under iCloud it says 'Photos off'

The photos that show up are not altered by me.

iPhone 13 mini, iOS 18

Are you perhaps taking the photos with the iPhone in the High Efficiency format HEIC, but syncing them to the Mac converted to JPEGs, then Photos cannot recognize them as duplicates on import, because the conversion to JPEG will create a new file with every syncing. It will be better to avoid the automatic conversion on import.

Also, olde photos, that you deleted from the Mac after importing them from the iPhone, will always appear anew photos, as long as you are keeping them on the iPhone.
