I often hear a notification sound, but I have no clue where it comes from. If it is from an opened tab on Safari, why can't Safari point me to the right one?

If the mysterious sounds persist quit all remaining open apps (use the "App Switcher" keyboard shortcut and quit each app in turn until only the Finder remains):
If that doesn't help restart your Mac in "Safe Mode" and let it run overnight while in that mode.

You can always open them again later.
But, for the moment, I do not hear any notification sound following my lunch with the lid closed, and later re-opened.
Are you suggesting that I no longer use Safari?
Rebooting Safari does not resolve the issue.
