How can I get the steps on my Apple watch to update in real time?

When I run on a treadmill, I would like to have the Activity app (or any app) tell me my real time steps. There is an annoying delay and I'm not even sure how to manually refresh the steps. Given that this is a standard feature on my cheap Fitbit, I assume there has to be a way to get this real time on my Apple watch. Any thoughts on how to resolve?

Apple has never shown much interest in steps as a fitness metric. Over time, they have actually decreased the amount of information about it on the Watch.

But I wouldn't expect much.

I have an app called StepsApp that doesn't update in real time but it's pretty close.
