USB-C to HDMI adaptor causing lossless audio streaming issues on MacBook Air M1

I bought the original apple usb-c to HDMI adaptor to stream lossless audio to a Pioneer A/V receiver from my MacBook Air M1. I used the front HDMI input of the receiver that is not support HDCP. Since then I can't stream from any service at my MacBook. Is this possible? How can this be fixed?

When you're streaming lossless or high-res audio from services like Apple Music, Tidal, or others, many of them enforce HDCP requirements when outputting through HDMI, especially when the stream is tied to video or has DRM-enforced playback conditions. The front HDMI port on your Pioneer VSX-1131 not supporting HDCP is almost certainly the root of the issue. When your MacBook negotiates the HDMI connection through the adapter, and finds that the receiving end doesn't support HDCP, it blocks playback of any protected streams — which can include lossless or high-resolution content, even audio-only, depending on the service.

Potential workaround could be:

  • Switch to a rear HDMI input. Your Pioneer model's read HDMI ports does support HDCP 2.2.
  • Use AirPlay to stream to the receiver instead. Your receiver supports this as well..
  • Try audio-only output via USB or a separate DAC, bypassing HDMI altogether. The M1 MacBooks support USB audio natively, and sending PCM over USB to a dedicated DAC or even to the receiver.

The exact model is the VSX-1131 but I don’t think that matters. The MacBook refuse to stream anything even by itself from that moment. Tried Apple TV plus, Apple Music amazon prime, Disney plus, Netflix. Like it blacklisted. I’ve also tried connecting with other HDMI devices as well. I’ve read somewhere that only solution is factory reset. But this is absolutely unacceptable from apple. I didn’t try something illegal. Just connected a wrong port

The information you provided is really helpful but I am already familiar with this stuff. My problem is not that connecting to the front HDMI has blocked playback. This looks normal. The problem is but my MacBook has been blocked forever. Like a punishment by Apple for the wrong connection. Is it a bug or a feature? Whatever it's called, it is very annoying. How can I get my MacBook unblock without restoring it?

1 - Have you tried one of the HDMI ports on the back of the Pioneer receiver?

Since the rear ports are HDCP compliant, if your Mac really did set itself to block streaming when you used the non-compliant port on the front, maybe using one of the back ports will re-establish it.

2 - Have you shut down & restarted your Mac? (A restart often clears up unexplained gremlins.)

3 - Have you tried streaming in a different user account on your Mac? (The problem may be account-related.)

Finally problem solved.
I called Apple support and they guided me to make the macbook return to normal operation, saving me from resetting it. It's something relatively simple that makes sense, but you can't easily think about it.
Thank you all for your effort and patience

Glad to know you found a solution.

How about if you tell us what the solution was, for the benefit of others who may come here hoping to solve a similar problem?
