Setting up rules in Mail on the Mac

I am trying to understand how to setup rules in my Mac Mail. I read information on how to setup rules in the Mac Mail in the user guide. I tried using tips to help, neither one made sense. I already setup some rules previously. Most of the rules that I previously setup do not work like they should. I need help, because I receive a lot of mail.
