MacBook Air volume control does not work when Apple Music is on

Volume controls on keyboard work fine when playing files or websites, but it does not respond or change the volume when playing Apple Music! I've tried all the tips from Apple but nothing works. Anyone else has this issue?

Sorry, but that's not a lot of information to go on.

As such, when the volume keys (F11/F12) don’t work with Apple Music but function fine with everything else (like Safari, YouTube, or QuickTime), it's usually due to how macOS is routing the audio output or managing media control focus.

A common cause is when your Mac is outputting audio through AirPlay or an HDMI-connected device. In these cases, macOS often disables software volume control because the external device (like a TV or receiver) is expected to manage the volume instead. Apple Music will respect this limitation more strictly than some other apps, oddly enough.

Some things you can try:

  • Go to System Settings > Sound > Output, and verify that the output device is set to your internal speakers (or something controllable). If it’s set to AirPlay, HDMI, or a DAC, switch to internal speakers or headphones and try the volume keys again with Apple Music.
  • If you're using Bluetooth headphones or speakers, check if they have their own volume control, as some handle audio mixing independently.
