How do I update my MacBook pro os?

Hi,

My MacBook pro has been stuck at macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 for a number of years now and Apple isn't allowing me to manually update.

I have a very well looked after MacBook Pro 13" MID 2012 with 8GB memory and 1TB storage. Theoretically it is becoming a brick because apps and hotmail are no longer supported or working. What can I do to bring it up to date?

Many thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

So I can’t delete the current OS and buy a disc with a newer version?

If your Mac was compatible with a newer version, you could download the installer for a newer version for free. (Apple stopped selling macOS updates on disc in 2011.)

The issue is that your Mac is not compatible with anything newer than Catalina. All that erasing your Mac would do is to leave you with a doorstop until you figured out some way to install some compatible OS: anything from Mac OS X 10.7.4 (Yosemite) to macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina).

The MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) got eight major macOS upgrades – all free – but Catalina is the end of the line. There are some applications like Firefox and LibreOffice that are compatible with Catalina – and could help you extend the useful life of the machine – but realistically, 13 years old is ancient, in computer terms.
