Can I play Fortnite on the 8th gen?

since Fortnite just came back on mobile, I tried downloading it and when I opened it, it says “sorry, this device can’t run Fortnite because it doesn’t meet the necessary hardware requirements.”

I have the storage to, I have 15gb available, and I updated to the latest version on my iPad.

According to Fortnite developers, Epic Games, Fortnite requires iOS 17.0 or later (per the App Store entry). However, the Fortnite website's FAQ under "What are the minimum device specifications to play Fortnite on iPad Natively (non-cloud)" states it requires at least 4GB of RAM and iPad OS 18 or higher. Odd discrepancy in iPad OS version aside, the 8th Generation iPad only has 3GB of RAM so that's likely the hardware requirement the message you are getting is referring to.

Supporting evidence: the App Store listing says

"Fortnite can be played on … iPad Pro 12.9in (2nd gen or later), iPad Pro 11in (1st gen or later), iPad Pro 10.5in, iPad Air (4th gen, 2020), iPad Air (5th gen, 2022), iPad (10th gen, 2022), iPad mini (6th gen, 2021)."

So no 8th or 9th generation iPads – all of which have only 3 GB of RAM.

@Carol: The 8th generation iPad can update to the current iOS 18.5, and will support iOS 26 later this year. There is no iPad model that stops at iOS 14. Any iPad compatible with iOS 14 can at the very least update to iOS 15.
