I believe that you can synchronize calendars either through Cloud, or through e-mail servers.

If iCloud isn't available on the Mac running Snow Leopard, and you aren't willing to use e-mail-based calendars ("I know Google calendars would work but I really don't want to start with new calendars."), you may be forced to do without.

Then again, maybe you are unaware of this:

What accounts are you using for your calendar? If you're using iCloud, they both need to be signed in to the same Apple Account. Then, go to Settings, click on your Avatar. Select "iCloud." Next to "Saved to iCloud" click "See All." Make sure that iCloud Calendar is enabled.

If you're using some other account for your calendar (for example, I use Google), you need to add that account to both computers in Settings>Internet Accounts.

"iCal" is the name of the old calendar app. You can use it with any calendar account.

Start here: On your old machine, go to Preferences>Internet Accounts. What accounts to you have there? If the only one you have is iCloud, make sure that Calendar syncing is enabled. If you have something else, click on each one and and turn on Calendar.

Unfortunately, I don't have a computer running that old a version of macOS so I can't be much more specific.

Unlike more recent Mac OS versions, system preferences in 10.6.8 doesn't even have an Internet Account panel. It only has a Systems Account panel which only shows my name as Admin. I realize that iCloud won't work as the interface between the old iCal and the newer Calendar apps because 10.6 cannot connect to iCloud unfortunately. What I think I need is a 3rd party app or service that can sync the calendars. I know Google calendars would work but I really don't want to start with new calendars. Thanks for your help.

FileInfo.com – .ICS File Extension

"An ICS file is a calendar file saved in a universal calendar format used by several email and calendar programs, including Microsoft Outlook, Google Calendar, and Apple Calendar. It allows users to share calendar information on the web and over email …"

So exporting your iCal calendar events to an .ICS file could help you to migrate them to other calendar services, not just Google Calendars.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 uses MobileMe instead of iCloud, but you should be able to add iCloud calendars as a CalDav account.

Ought to be the iCloud username and password (although nowadays you probably need to create an app password specifically for it). The server for calendars might be p01-caldav.icloud.com - although, again, things change and there might be a different number than p01 (or there might be a better one depending on your location).

More detail is e.g., here: https://nico-beuermann.de/s9y/index.php?archives/115-English.html which is a few years old but still fundamentally correct I think.
