Struggling to open Quicktime on Apple M2 Pro

When I double click on the Quicktime app, it launches the Applications folder but won't allow me to select the QuickTime app (greyed out).

It can be a bit confusing at first, lacking clues on how to proceed, but …

When you launch the QuickTime Player application, it will show an Open… dialog box, to open a compatible document (video or audio file). It is not asking to open the application again.

You can then navigate to a compatible file (using the dropdown menu at the top-center, and/or using the sidebar),

or click Cancel and choose one of the options in the menu bar (e.g. screen recording) instead.

The Open… dialog box will start showing the last used folder as default. If you were use this dialog box to open a file on the Desktop, then it would show that as default the next time.

For opening existing documents, you may find it more easy to just double-click a compatible document configured to open in QuickTime Player, or use drag-and-drop to move the document icon to the application icon (in the Dock).
