The beta is currently only open to registered developers.

A public beta is expected later this summer.

You should NEVER install a beta on a device you rely on. Beta software is intended for testing on non-critical hardware. It is inherently unstable and there WILL be compatibility problems, especially with things like banking software.

No, it doesn't NEED to update.

Make sure you understand the consequences of installing a buggy release that isn't even at the public beta level before installing it. Make absolutely sure you have a full backup before proceeding.

I've had an iPhone since the iPhone 4. I consider myself very knowledgeable about how to use iPhones. And I've never used a beta version of iOS. And here's why. My iPhone is my only phone. I have no landline phone. I also need my iPhone as a second factor in logging on to a number of government websites I need to access regularly and to my work accounts. If my iPhone were made inoperable by beta software, even for a day, my life could become quite difficult.

No one who isn't a developer NEEDS beta software.

Just wait until it is released officially, which based on the fact Apple is holding the major product announcement on September 9th, means iOS 26 will be released soon afterward.
