Safari can't connect to any apple pages, App Store etc.

Hi,

just reinstalled OS X10.8.5 on my old MBP. I have wifi and internet connection - can access google, amazon etc using Safari. However, Safari is not downloading software updates saying 'an internet connection is required' nor access App Store. Also, when I try apple.com it says 'safari can't establish a secure connection to server "www.apple.com".

Would really appreciate any guidance on this issue?
