I'm having the same issue and finding no answers at all. This just started today, 4 June 2025. Everything was working fine until this morning. I've had to restart my phone three times just to look at email. Highly frustrating.

Would love someone at Apple to take note of this issue and fix it.

Cheers for the feedback - I kind of wondered if something of the sort was going on.

I dropped by when the thread was one page in length, but with no solution - So had a look at my settings and had an idea that iCloud Private Relay and associated settings may be playing a part.

So made a change and for me it has worked.

The other iPhone + iPad users here don’t have the issue btw

Perhaps a long shot:

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN.

While VPN is not the cause of ALL iOS issues, it is in the top 10% of causes, and an update frequently breaks it.

same problem here on my iPhone 14 Plus with iOS 18.5; solved the problem with removing my gmail account within the apple mail app. I installed the gmail app and will wait until there is an iOS update to connect my gmail account to my apple mail account again.

This problem started long after the iOS 18.5 update. I think Google has changed something, which now creates a problem with the Apple mail app in combination with a linked google account.

I spoke to an Apple Support tech via the support app on my iPad and through iMessage and brought the issue to their attention (by linking this forum post). I told them that by the looks of this forum it clearly is an iOS 18.5 issue that EVERYONE is experiencing. Hopefully this tech is able to forward it up the chain and it is taken seriously.

I’m also experiencing the mail app freeze on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. Mine specifically freezes when I tap on my Gmail folder, none of the others. I have 3 accounts linked - my iCloud which is a bundle consisting of of my .iCloud account and a few personal domains, Gmail, and an old Yahoo account. I’ll be checking mail or refreshing my mail to see if any new emails have come in and as soon as I tap on the Gmail folder to view the emails in it, it highlights the Gmail bar as I tap it, but nothing happens. Then the whole app is frozen and I have to reboot the phone.
