Mac Pro 6, 1 (Late 2013) is constantly restarting and getting error as "Your computer restarted because of a problem"

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone might be able to shed light on an issue I’m having with my late 2013 Mac Pro (12-core, 64GB RAM, 512GB SSD, macOS Monterey 12.7.6).

Lately, the machine has been restarting unexpectedly. It doesn’t seem to happen during any particular activity — my usage is fairly light overall, with the most demanding app I regularly use being Lightroom, and even that not daily.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • SMC reset
  • PRAM reset
  • Erased and clean-installed macOS Monterey
  • Swapped in the original Apple SSD
  • Brought it to an Apple Store (in Paris), where a RAM-related issue was suspected
  • Tried multiple RAM combinations in different slots
  • Installed new RAM from OWC
  • Ran extended memory tests overnight (no issues reported)
  • Used EtreCheck (no major flags)
  • Ran CPU stress tests (Cinebench, Heaven, etc. – all completed without crashing)
  • Reapplied thermal paste and thoroughly cleaned the machine internally

Temperatures seem fine — usually under 70°C, and I use a fan control app to help manage thermals.

After each unexpected shutdown, I receive the “Your computer restarted because of a problem” message. There’s no clear pattern, and no heavy usage at the time of crash.

I’ve read similar reports from other Mac Pro owners, and in one case, a user traced it to the CPU. I’ve sourced a replacement CPU and plan to install it soon to see if it helps.

If anyone has run into something similar or has ideas I haven’t considered, I’d be grateful. I understand this machine is getting older (purchased in 2015), but I’ve always loved it and would like to keep it running smoothly for as long as possible.

Thanks in advance!

That fault is internal to the CPU. It is replaceable.
