When you upload content to third-party applications, including ChatGPT, the safety and privacy of your data largely depend on the specific privacy policy and data handling practices of that service. These policies outline how your data is stored, used, shared, and protected. Therefore, it is essential to review and understand a platform's privacy policy before sharing sensitive or personal information.

You can review OpenAI's Privacy Policy here: OpenAI Privacy Policy.

This policy outlines how OpenAI collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use services like ChatGPT. It includes details on:

  • Data Collection: Information you provide (e.g., prompts, uploads) and data collected automatically (e.g., usage data, device information).
  • Data Usage: How your data is used to provide and improve services, conduct research, and ensure security.
  • Data Sharing: Circumstances under which data may be shared, such as with service providers or for legal reasons.
  • User Controls: Options available to you for managing your data, including settings to opt out of certain data uses.

👋 Hi there!

Great question — and thanks for raising a point that many users wonder about!

Let me share something that hasn’t been fully covered yet: using the “+” button to upload a file doesn’t grant ChatGPT any sort of general access to your device or its file system. Think of it like handing someone a printed photo — they’ll only see the one you give them, not your entire photo album.

🔐 Here’s a helpful way to think about it from the Apple ecosystem perspective: it’s similar to when you manually attach a photo in iMessage or Mail — the app only sees what you attach, not everything in your Photos app. Uploading a file to ChatGPT works in the same selective, user-driven way.

So yes — the option to upload exists, but nothing happens unless you actively choose to share something. Even then, you stay in control at every step.

Hope that clarifies things a bit more!

Wishing you a smooth and secure experience with your tech 🌟
