Some Macs from 2009 and 2010 can be upgraded as far as macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). Like Mac OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan), High Sierra is obsolete, and it's very hard to find software for it these days.
If you can tell us your Mac's exact model and hardware model year (from > About This Mac…), we can check whether it is eligible to run High Sierra. It's really time to replace the whole computer, but if it was eligible to run High Sierra, that might let you run a less out-of-date version of the Firefox ESR web browser (see below).
What is Brave or Firefox? May sound like a stupid question but I honestly don’t know. 😊
They are third-party Web browsers. They do the same job as Safari, but in a slightly different way. Similar to how a Ford and a Chevy and a Honda might have somewhat different controls, even though they are all vehicles.
The current versions of those browsers will not run on your old Mac, but there are two Extended Support Release versions of Firefox that might. The one that runs on El Capitan is really old, and Mozilla stopped providing critical security updates for it over three and a half years ago. Mozilla is strongly recommending that Firefox users move to something newer than El Capitan.
The one that runs on High Sierra is almost, but not quite, to the point of "no more updates, ever." (It was going to reach that point last year, but then Mozilla gave it a couple of reprieves.)
