You may want to consider installing Linux Mint on that laptop to get an up to date non-Apple OS which has access to the current versions of popular web browsers (Firefix, Vivaldi, Brave, Google Chrome). Linux is not for everyone, but it is a great way to extend the useful life of older computers if you are willing to learn a new OS. You can easily check out what Linux Mint is like by booting the Linux Mint installer and selecting the "Live" option. Keep in mind the "Live" option will operate very slow due to the very slow USB2 ports, but it will give you a basic idea of what the OS is like....performance once installed to the internal drive will be much better. The "Live" option will not make any changes to the system.
If you decide to install Linux Mint, then make sure to create a bootable macOS USB El Capitan installer before you wipe the drive, or you may find it very difficult to reinstall macOS if you decide to go back to macOS later.
It's time to retire that old MacBook Pro – or relegate it to tasks such as
that you cannot do on current Macs.
I would suggest getting a Mac with a M4-family chip, at least 16 GB of RAM, and at least 512 GB of internal SSD space.
Yes, you can, but I'm not going to mention here how you can as it's not supported by Apple.
However, if you Google 'run recent Mac OS on 2009 Mac', you might find how it could be possible. Nevertheless, 2009 is a very old Mac and if you find you want to run more recent software rather than what you currently run, then it's definitely time to buy a newer machine. There are some incredible bargains to be had on the last Intel Macs, and if you can afford one, M1 MBP/Airs are amazingly good machines but very cheap compared with more recent ones.
Mac OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan is the newest OS that the 2009 MBP can run.
It's time to replace the sixteen year old computer.
