MacBook Pro M4 Pro (14") Battery Draining Fast (~5 Hours) – Normal?

Hi everyone!

My new Macbook is experiencing really fast battery drain, lasting around 5 hours.

Device:

  • MacBook Pro M4 Pro (14-inch, 2024)
  • 24GB RAM / 512GB SSD
  • Cycle Count: 13
  • Purchased: 1 week ago

Usage Scenario:

  • Apps Running: VS Code (moderate project), Firefox (~10 tabs), Zulip, Telegram.
  • Tried Safari: No significant battery improvement over Firefox.
  • No external devices (monitors, drives, etc.).
  • No widgets/dashboard apps.
  • Energy Mode: Automatic.
  • WiFi: Connected to WPA3 network.

Issue:

  • Battery drains in ~5 hours under this workload.

Steps Taken:

  1. Closed unnecessary apps/background processes.
  2. Ensured macOS is up-to-date.
  3. Compared Firefox/Safari – no major difference.

I guess Apple Intelligence, Siri and Splotlight indexings are on.

Screen brightness: ~50%.

Thank you for your help!

what is Most Unusual is that you are trying to run that device as if it were an iPhone.

That computer is a battery-CAPABLE device. It is not optimized as a battery-operated device. (It is NOT an iPhone.)

Your computer performs best when connected to AC power, such as the power adapter. It can use the full output of the Power Adapter AND when doing especially challenging work will also freely "borrow" power from the battery. In some cases, even with the power adapter connected, the charged state may decline during very stressful work.

When used only on battery, your computer has no extra cushion of power, and may perform more slowly. However, for ordinary non-stressful tasks this may not be objectionable (possibly not even noticeable.)

In general, you should ALWAYS connect a power source when it is possible to do so, and only run on batteries (which could be somewhat slower) when no power sources are at hand. Your Mac maintains optimum battery charge levels under program control, and will NEVER over-charge. Activate Battery Health Management and do not spend another moment of your time thinking about charging.

I faced the same problem, on a laptop of the same configuration, but after starting the system, I did not update the sequoia, I had it version 15.1, try to update the system to the latest one, I think the problem is in it, otherwise I don't know why macbook pro m4 pro, holds less than my air on m1, in the same tasks

can you also tell me what country macbook you are using and what plug, I had the india version, the color is black, if that makes any difference at all

Thanks for pointing out using Macbook connected to AC power but my question is not related to performance or other stuff but only on battery drain.

I am asking about why my brand new laptop's battery is being drained in just 5 hours for even not that high tasks? On Apple's website it is said that it would last 14 to 22 hours, I was expecting at least around 10 hours, and why I am just getting 5 hours?

<< On Apple's website it is said that it would last 14 to 22 hours. >>

so if you EXACTLY replicate the test environment, then I expect your battery performance would be similar to the numbers published.

However, if you want to do ANYTHING outside of that test case, it will not perform at that rate.

The test case is provided so that you can get a RELATIVE sense of how long this Mac's battery will last compared to other Macs. it is NOT a Guarantee that the battery will last as long as their test came, no matter what you are doing.

Plug it it!
