Mac Pro desktop (Mid 2010) GPU FAIL

I have a Mac Pro desktop (Mid 2010) 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. It has ATI Radeon HD 5770 Video Card. I was using it with the 30” Apple Cinema Display. Recently I plugged a Samsung 43” 4k display into the Mini Display Port using an HDMI adapter. This seemed to work well for about 6 months then the GPU died. I was just wondering how much the Samsung 4k display contributed to the GPU failing? Does using multiple displays reduce the life of a GPU?

generally speaking, no.

Once the screen is drawn, refreshing the screen every 60th second or do is done by a hardware automaton that fetches the data out of the display RAM, and serializes it and sends it to the display over the connected cable. It is a fairly high data rate, but does not tax anything but the display RAM memory, which the card can support several displays at once without stress.

What is somewhat more heat producing is that HDMI runs at 5 Volts, where DisplayPort Runs at 3 Volts. Again, not a big deal. What IS a Big deal is the HEAT generated by an adapter TO HDMI. Consider the possibility the adapter is what has failed. Also, adapting the card's DVI output to HDMI is a MUCH simpler, cheap, passive adapter.

There is a lot of complex screen drawing, scaling, and shading power on these cards, as well as a lot of RAM memory, and failure rates are a function of the complexity of the cards, the number of connections between modules, and Heat generated.

They get hot and die. Don't take it personally.

if you replace that card with a Metal-capable card, you could use 10.14 Mojave.

Getting a card with Mac firmware is VERY important. The Mac-firmware ATI/AMD 5770 supports more displays, and run substantially cooler and quieter than the original cards. 5770 is longer-lasting, and has been and still is plentiful on the used market.

OWC/Macsales has carried used ones in the past, but currently out-of-stock

I’m thinking about buying another GPU but since they’re no longer made will have to buy used, like ebay? I’m a little leary of doing this because I’m thinking there’s a good chance I get a GPU that’s not working? Any thought's on how to find a good working used GPU?

I’m using this computer exclusively with OS El Capitan because that’s as high as I can go using my older Adobe software on DVD’s. Can’t upgrade, or software won’t work. I have other newer Mac’s to use for most things.

Thanks
