Is my new second monitor crashing my iMac?

Since I bought a new second monitor, my imac has been crashing colorfully. Could I be asking too much of its GPU? Or could the USB-C connection be the culprit?

(I don't have to swim far to get out of my depth in these waters, so forgive me if it should be obvious!)

My mac:

Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019

3.7 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5,

Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB,

100 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 memory,

Sonoma 14.4.1

My new monitor:

Dell S2722QC (link: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-27-4k-uhd-usb-c-monitor-s2722qc/apd/210-bbqt/monitors-monitor-accessories)

Connection: USB-C upstream/DisplayPort with Power Delivery (power up to 65W)

Or is this the universe helping me pre-post-rationalize a shiny new mac?

Many thanks!

iMac 27″, macOS 14.4

Pretty sure that using the Dell supplied USB-C Gen 2 cable in the iMac's Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port is the problem.

Option 1

Replace the Dell supplied USB-C Gen 2 cable with a true Thunderbolt 3/USB-C cable.

Option 2

Connect that display to the iMac using a USB-C to HDMI adapter and a short HDMI cable.

I personally have not tested option 1. Plus the Dell display could choke on a Thunderbolt cable.

I have had good success using USB-C to HDMI adapters with various Mac's and third party displays.
