use a VPN on macOS 11.7.10

I would like to install a VPN in the modem or the router.

As I don't have any experience whatsoever with a VPN, I would ask if any person could advise on the matter.

Do you own/control the modem and/or router? Why brand/model?
Why? Are you trying to improve security (commercial consumer VPNs generally don't) or trying to get around geo-blocking (legitimate use but maybe frowned upon for advice in a corporation-owned forum)?
Do you have the technical skill to do this at the modem/router level (usually much harder than on devices where you install apps)? You say you have no experience with VPN at all - what about router firmware like ddwrt or tomato?

Maybe one client on the computer you plan to stream geo-blocked content from. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. I don't think you need a VPN for security - certainly not on your home network sitting behind your ISP's firewall and security services.

it's not default that routers let you add a VPN, some support it but most do not, so if yours do not then you may have to buy a new one.

Thank you for the reply.

I am looking for advise as a single ordinary end-user.

To answer your questions:

1. The modem is supplied by the internet provider but I can control it.

2. I am indeed trying to improve the security whilst geo-blocking is certainly a factor.

3. I don’t have the skill to do this at the modem level and therefore I am inviting advise.

I have no experience with tomato or other firmware.

To make a long story short, I would like to use a VPN for the above reasons. If it is advised not to try to install it in the modem/ router but instead install a VPN client on each computer, then I will follow that of course.

Further to the matter, I am a Mac user for over 20 years and except from the common repairs or reinstallation’s, I am not very wel skilled to undertake complicated issues.

This will have to be done by trained engineers.
