What is the maximum distance for “Control Nearby Devices” to work on Apple Watch?

Is there a maximum distance between iPhone and watch to use the “control nearby devices” accessibility feature? It seems to be very sporadic and often doesn’t show my iPhone under “nearby devices” until my watch is within a couple feet of it. And that obviously defeats the purpose.
