Why can't I import music files from Mac to my iPhone?

I read that you cannot import audio files from the cloud to a phone, only from a computer, so I connected my iphone to my macbook air, opened music on my computer, selected the audio files I wanted to export, saw the option to export to a device-I picked my iphone-but, nothing happened. I tried several times, with no success. What am I missing?

Copy songs from iPhone to MacBook? My iPhone is my primary device and so I download free audio files (including music) direct to my iPhone. The default app is of course Music. But I also have a Mac and have imported a purchased CD music to the Music app on my Mac. But it seems I cannot merge the two. I have to 'sync' and therefore one library will be overwritten by the other (ie. Mac Music library overwrites iPhone Music library). Is there a process where I can copy my audio from iPhone to Mac without losing my current Mac library? Or Mac to iPhone without losing my current iPhone library? Thank you.
