AirPods Pro 2 hearing aid function only works in one ear at a time

My AirPods pro 2 hearing aid function only works in one ear at a time and not when both are installed. As soon as I install the second AirPod the hearing aid function stops working in both ears. How do I fix this? It worked correctly when I first set them up as hearing aids. They function normally listening to music on my IPAD with both Airpods installed.
