How do I hide the album picture between photos on iPad Pro?

On my iPad Pro running iPadOS 18.4.1, the picture that Apple chose as the album picture still appears in the gaps between the photos when I scroll through the album. On my wife's iPad Air 2 running iOS 18.4.1 the spaces between the photos are opaque, so the album theme picture doesn't show through. How can I achieve this effect on my iPad Pro?

"Reduce Transparency" was already turned on. I tried to insert a screenshot, but this website says it's too big. Since Apple automatically reduces images to mail them, I would have expectted the same here. In the upper half of the screen, the theme picture shows through in the gaps between the thumbnails. I would like the gaps to be filled with an opaque color (black or white) as they are in the lower half.
