using safari / search engine duck duck go I am not getting the padlock up when on https web page.
also tried safari / google still no padlock.
if I use opera the padlock shows up.

The likely reason is that nearly all websites use HTTPS now, and the "lock icon" is considered to indicate a presumed status. The converse (not encrypted) is visibly indicated.
You can still examine a website's encryption status by using the Safari menu > Connection Security Details.

If you attempt to access an HTTP site, you will get a warning that it is not secure. Having the lock icon on secure HTTPS sites is now redundant, since any site you visit will be a HTTPS unless you specifically allow access to an unsecured website. It is now difficult to even access a HTTP website using Safari, and if you do you are alerted with a popup as well as in the Search Field.
