Why doesn't Safari use tabs like Firefox and Chrome for Yahoo news articles?

I use Safari exclusively on my Macs but I constantly wonder why Safari doesn't use tabs like Firefox and Chrome. My home page is the Yahoo news page and if I want to read more of something and I click on it the homepage goes away and the article comes up. So when I go back to the homepage I have to start back up at the top of the page and not pick up where I left off. I have used all three of the seeting for tabs to no avail. Why doesn't Apple make tabs automatic on selecting something like the other browsers? And Yes I know I can hold down the command key.
