When names a pages document the character ":" is not accepted. Is there a reason for this? I try to name a document for a bible verse and it will not accept the : for chapter and verse.

The file paths used by the Finder require the colon character as a path separator and thus as already explained, it is treated as an illegal character. Substitute '_' for your colon filename characters.
The colon character is an illegal character to use when saving a file. The name of the Pages document is also the name used to save the file, so it cannot be used.
