IRS website adds hyphens to social security number and stops online payment

How do I stop the IRS online website from adding hyphens to the social security number since it says it will not accept the hyphens to move to the next page? I tried on Safari, Chrome and on my Apple phone. They all have the same problem.

I love Apple support! A tech worked with me and it is not the hyphens that are the problem even though the alert on the IRS site says it is the hyphens. The page does not like something else like the validation year and when you change the other item, you have to delete the social security numbers in both boxes and reenter them. So ignore the alert about the hyphens!

I had a similar experience with another .gov website. They insisted I had to use Google Chrome. I insisted otherwise. In the end the problem was something along the lines of what you described — it was completely unrelated to the alert or anything else; it was just poor website design. It wouldn't have worked with any browser.

It took me nearly a week to make that determination though. Glad you got it fixed.
