Calculator icon is stuck on my Mac desktop after restart

I wanted to use the calculator, and the image came up on my home page. I cannot get rid of it because the icon just sits there, no matter what site or what document is open. I right click on it and nothing comes up. I tried to delete it but it won't go away. I turned my computer off and on but it won't go away. I have an Apple notebook running Mac OS Monteray v 12.7.6

I just had the same issue today with the calculator icon. Despite restarting a device many times fixes the issue, I didn't restart my iMac because i wanted to find another solution.

The best solution, and i am wondering how "Apple's experts" didn't know about it, is to reset the 'dock' process from the terminal.

Open Terminal and type:

killall Dock

This will fix your problem with any icon from an app that stuck on your screen.

Cheers

I'd put that computer repair place on the boycott list. Was it on the Apple Authorized Service Provider list?

Sorry to hear about about your loss. 🤭. If you need to get a new Mac and budget is a concern consider the new Mac Mini M4. I just got one with 16 dGB of RAM (the minimum), and 1 TB of SSD storage and a 32" 4K 3rd party monitor for $1429, $650 less than a comparably configured new 24" iMac. It runs circles around my previous 2017 27" iMac. There's just no comparison.

Just some food for thought.

Can you provide us with a screenshot of the offending icon, please?

I wonder if you have maybe somehow created an "alias" to the Calculator app, though that wouldn't explain your inability to delete the icon. If you double-click the icon does the Mac respond in any way?

Alias of the Calculator app.

I had to take my computer to a computer repair place because I needed a new speaker. He tried several things and restarted my computer and it was gone! I asked him what he did and he said he just restarted the computer, but I believe he did something else and didn't tell me. But it's gone now.

Terminal is an application on the Mac.

You can find it in the Applications folder > Utilities folder.

Or you can find it by typing "Terminal" into the search field at the top of the Launchpad window.

When Terminal launches, type the command offered above by user @xarisk - killall Dock - into the Terminal window and then press the [enter] key.

This may (or may not) remove the icon that is concerning you.

Press ⌘Q to quit the Terminal app.
