Unable to stop a song in Music app on Mac

Hi, I want to add a stop to one of my songs but for some reason it just keeps playing the song

I tried:

  • Restarting my computer 👎
  • Quitting music while holding shift key 👎
  • Changing the start 👎
  • Re-adding the song back to my library 👎


If anyone can help I will be really grateful

To stop a song that keeps playing in the Music app on your Mac, try these steps:

  1. Force Quit the Music App:
  2. Restart Your Mac:
  3. Check for Background Processes: Open "Activity Monitor" (search for it using Spotlight). Look for any Music-related processes and quit them.


If the issue persists, updating macOS or reinstalling the Music app might help.

Unfortunately, the Music app on macOS doesn’t include a true "stop" function—only play, pause, and skip. If a song keeps playing despite changes, it could be due to corrupted playback data or sync issues with iCloud Music Library.


One thing you might try is removing the song from your library completely, restarting your Mac, and then re-importing it as a fresh file—not just re-adding it from the cloud. Also, check if the file behaves the same in another music app like VLC. If it works there, the issue may be specific to Apple Music’s handling of that file.
