How can I fix broken Safari on my Mac Pro running macOS Mojave 10.14.6?

I am running macOS 10.14.6 Mojave on my MacPro 5,1, and safari is completely broken and won't open. I've tried downloading safari and reloading but it still doesn't work. Is there instruction son what to to do Pre- install, files that I need to look for and delete, and what is the newest version for Mojave.

thanks

Once you have that backup (ideally, more than just one backup) the following are a few suggestions to consider, in order from simple and fast to more time-consuming and tedious.

Quit the Safari app if it open. Press and hold a Shift key while launching Safari from Applications or the Dock.

  • That action opens Safari in windowed mode (not full screen) with no previously opened windows or tabs.

Release the Shift key when a Safari window opens, or it crashes again.

If that doesn't immediately fix it, create a new, temporary User Account according to Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support. Log out of your usual Account and log into that temporary one. Skip the steps regarding various preferences: select Skip, Set Up Later, Not Now, etc. Determine if you can launch Safari in that User Account. If the same problem occurs in that User Account, reinstalling macOS is justified: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support.

If the problem does not occur in that temporary User Account, then fixing the problem becomes more challenging. Write back for instructions. Leave that temporary User Account alone for now, because one fairly quick fix would be to copy its ~/Library/Safari folder and replace your usual ~/Library/Safari with its contents. When doing that, the importance of a Time Machine backup becomes critical.

When I open the Safari App, I get the Safari menu at the top of the screen but no browser window. I can pull down the different menus, but when I Home or last page opened, it crashes. When I choose to open New Window, nothing happens, all the same in "Safe Mode" or normal. If I choose something from my bookmarks it crashes. I typically use Brave as my browser, but there are times where I need another browser to open something that won't open with Brave

looks like I am probably going to go the "re-install" route

i'm not user if I understand the difference between "local recovery system" and the "internet recovery". I'm assuming that I would go with internet to get a fresh copy of the OS. From what I've read, this will not affect the apps and settings and accounts on the computer, just the OS and the core apps that come with it. I have made a backup just in case. but all I would do is the install right over the existing with out erasing the HD
