Messages not working on Mac since upgrading to Sequoia 15.4

I updated to Mac OS 15.4 yesterday and suddenly messages won't sync with my iPhone, send, or receive messages properly. Some messages go through as text/sms instead of iMessages, most don't go through or come in at all. I thought I was able to solve the problem yesterday after repeatedly logging back into iCloud and rebooting my computer, but today the problem resurfaced.

I have already tried logging out of Messages, signing back into iCloud, disabling Private Relay, rebooting my computer, pressing "sync now", and verifying all the settings on my phone and iCloud account (including Text Message Forwarding) are correct. Nothing seems to fix it! I have looked for a Messages-specific software update in the App Store but there doesn't seem to be any.

Off-topic, I also had to disable notifications from the News app on my computer after installing the update yesterday because I am getting multiple notifications per second about news articles published last year.

I had this same issue after updating to Sequoia the other day. Unable to send any messages as iMessage.

But it's fixed now after I logged out of my iCloud account on my macbook and logged back in. The settings look a little different, as if they've been updated, and the messages are sending now as iMessage. So my hunch is that there was an issue with the OS update that glitches when the user is logged in to iMessage and it won't properly update the Messages app until you log out and log back in.

It took me a few tries to log back into my iMessage, it failed a couple times and I was worrying I had made the situation worse. But a few minutes later I tried a third time and it works fine, and now everything's working again.

UPDATE:

A couple of days after updating my computer to Sequoia 15.4.1, iMessages on my laptop suddenly resumed working. The day I updated it (and the day it stopped working), I tried many of the "fixes" mentioned here -- syncing messages, signing out and back in, etc. The issue would appear resolved for a few minutes and then go back to green bubbles/SMS messages and say "not delivered."

I didn't explicitly do anything more to resolve this issue, but I am now able to receive and send iMessages without any difficulty on my laptop.

I also am able to send and receive SMS messages, but I used to be able to do that. That worked even with iMessage did not. My husband is unable to send/receive SMS messages on his laptop, but I think it's due to the fact that he doesn't have his Messages syncing across iCloud because he's too cheap to increase his storage limit - LOL!

I wish I had more help to offer those of you who are still unable to use iMessage on your computer.

I had this issue too (in the shape of Messages being super busy with the rainbow wheel shortly after launch, to the point of being completely unusable).

Solved by deleting /Users/you/Library/Messages and restarting the Mac. Note that this might lead to loss of message history, but in my case the Mac was less than a week in use, so not an issue.
