Messages not working on Mac since upgrading to Sequoia 15.4

I updated to Mac OS 15.4 yesterday and suddenly messages won't sync with my iPhone, send, or receive messages properly. Some messages go through as text/sms instead of iMessages, most don't go through or come in at all. I thought I was able to solve the problem yesterday after repeatedly logging back into iCloud and rebooting my computer, but today the problem resurfaced.

I have already tried logging out of Messages, signing back into iCloud, disabling Private Relay, rebooting my computer, pressing "sync now", and verifying all the settings on my phone and iCloud account (including Text Message Forwarding) are correct. Nothing seems to fix it! I have looked for a Messages-specific software update in the App Store but there doesn't seem to be any.

Off-topic, I also had to disable notifications from the News app on my computer after installing the update yesterday because I am getting multiple notifications per second about news articles published last year.

I had this same issue after updating to Sequoia the other day. Unable to send any messages as iMessage.

But it's fixed now after I logged out of my iCloud account on my macbook and logged back in. The settings look a little different, as if they've been updated, and the messages are sending now as iMessage. So my hunch is that there was an issue with the OS update that glitches when the user is logged in to iMessage and it won't properly update the Messages app until you log out and log back in.

It took me a few tries to log back into my iMessage, it failed a couple times and I was worrying I had made the situation worse. But a few minutes later I tried a third time and it works fine, and now everything's working again.

Same issue here, it is really frustrating. I recently updated my MacBook to MacOS Sequoia 15.4.1, and ever since my messages are either sending as SMS instead of iMessage, or just flat out failing to send. Messages are also not syncing completely. I've logged in and out of iMessage, restarted my MacBook, signed in and out of iCloud, and so on. Text message forwarding is enabled and correctly set up on my iPhone.

I'm having the same issue. It's been intermittent prior to the update—one of the recommended fixes was making sure both of your devices were updated. Now, the messages will not send or update from my Mac on Sequoia 15.4 at all. This is driving me insane. I paid so much money for these devices and a HUGE part of the sell is the "Apple ecosystem". I can find threads from YEARS ago where people were having issues. HOW has this not been resolved???????

EDIT: now the app won't even open on my Mac. I keep getting "Force Quit: Application Not Responding".

I will add to this - the engineers have not come back with a resolution but I was told this was escalated.

HOWEVER, my issue suddenly resolved itself after ~2 weeks. I didn't apply any update or anything. My messages were suddenly back to normal where I receive them on Mac in real time and I can send them as well.

To answer someone's question too, this was also affecting FaceTime as iMessage and FT are linked

This is really annoying. I have tried everything and it's still not working. I logged out and logged back into my Apple ID and it worked for all of 5 minutes before turning all my messages green again. Apple needs to get it together! And what's sad, there's no time frame on when this will be fixed. Where can I complain because I don't want to hear excuses. They need to fix this immediately.

Same problem here. Same issues with a barrage of old news notifications. Same buggy Messages app - not sending/syncing and crashing. Also, other backdated notifications suddenly reappearing (FaceTime calls that aren't real, location sharing that isn't current, etc). Unbelievably inconvenient. And yes I've tried everything short of an OS reinstall (which honestly none of us should have to do). The problem also started the moment my computer woke up after upgrading to 15.4.1. Cmon Apple. This is so unacceptable.

I seem to have this issue after nearly every software upgrade and it is driving me insane. Worse is that this time, the software upgrade ran overnight with my laptop shut and without me actually consenting to it (admittedly, I probably ignored a notification about it happening, but I digress). It upgraded to Sequoia 15.4.1 and I'm on a Macbook Pro Intel i5 from 2018.

I've tried EVERYTHING. Re-syncing Messages to iCloud on both my laptop and my phone, turning sync to iCloud off and back on, signing out of my Apple ID and back in, restarting devices, and nothing works. My messages will sync intermittently between my phone and laptop, but it's very delayed, inconsistent, and I'm unable to send ANY messages from my computer. It's a massive disruption.

I have 2 16" 2019 Macbook Pro's. Both almost identical (the only difference is the video card memory: 4gb/8gb). Messages is working on one and not the other.

Sync now isn't working and looks to be stuck at the moment. I've checked all iPhone settings (14 Pro) and they are correct.

I have done every suggestion in this thread minus deleting files. Nothing has worked to restore functionality.

I no longer see any point in contacting Apple directly. Other users have already done so and have not received a solution either. So there won't be one.

I have tried all the tips offered by numerous people in videos or on their websites. Nothing helps.

No, I don't use a VPN or antivirus program, which wouldn't be effective here anyway. Logging out and back into iCloud and all the other tips didn't help either.

That is your choice. You can see on the 5 pages here solutions that have worked for others and those that have called Apple themselves and no longer experience any problems. That appears to be the opposite of your conclusion that others have done so and not received a solution so there won't be one. With the millions of devices out there without any problem and the small percentage that do, it is only going to be those few that contact Apple for a resolution, and that will not resolve the problem on your device.

I have noticed the comments here that say the tips helped. But I have found many more comments in forums, on help pages, and on YouTube, for example, that say exactly what I am saying, namely that it did not help.

Incidentally, I have a lot of contacts with other Mac users who, of course, also give a lot of tips. The fact that there are millions of devices without problems doesn't mean much, as many users only own one device. For example, I know many iPhone users who do not use any other Apple devices. So the problem cannot even arise in the first place. And many users do not report that there is a problem because they do not express themselves online. So you cannot conclude from the number of complaints that have become public that the number of people affected is low. If the number of people affected by the faulty synchronization were low, there would hardly be so many publications reporting on it, or so many forums, Mac help sites, or content creators addressing the problem. When comparing solutions, it repeatedly turns out that in most cases (not all) it cannot be due to the settings of the users' devices. The problem must therefore be sought elsewhere.

My settings on the computers are exactly as they should be. But even when all devices are receiving messages, it sometimes happens that messages only arrive on the iPhone and the 2011 MacBook Pro with High Sierra, but not on the two M1 Macs.

And by the way – in Apple's eyes, the number of users affected by a problem is known to be very low – regardless of whether it is actually a small number of people affected or a series of errors caused by Apple that have become known worldwide. In Apple's language, it is always and only a “small number” or “a very small percentage.”
