imac 27 mid 2010 with high sierra won't update software to see iphone 14 with iOS 18.4

Yesterday I updated iPhone 14 to iOS 18.4. This morning when I connected iPhone to iMac 27 mid 2010 with high sierra it asked me to update the software to see iPhone. When I click proceed it warns me that it cannot update the software due to a network problem. What can I do?

Disconnect the iPhone from the iMac and restart both.

Make sure that the iMac has a good connection to your local network.

Then reconnect the iPhone to the iMac and see if the update appears and works.

Note: that article was last updated on November 8 2023 and states support for High Sierra and iOS 17.

So it is not clear yet if High Sierra will get an update to support iOS 18 or not.

Sadly if Apple decides not to push out a supplemental iOS 18 update for High Sierra.

Then it is time to replace that old iMac with a new Mac or one that can run a later macOS version.
