How to checkerboard video and add graphics in iMovie with 2 video tracks?

iMovie allows for 2 video tracks, correct?

If so, are graphics counted as one or is it 2 video tracks plus graphics?

I'd like to checkerboard my video then add graphics (lower 3rds ...) before render.

Is that possible?
