Create App Specific Password with an SSO Account

Hi all,

how can I create an app specific password, if my Apple ID uses single sign on (SSO)?

When trying to create the app specific password, the dialog asks me

Confirm Your Password

For your security, enter the password for: my.email@address.com

But my account does not have a password, as the authentication is done through SSO.

Your Apple Account, which is the only thing you can create app specific passwords for, using Apple's service, does not use SSO. It uses your Apple ID and password, which means you need to enter that password for it.

If you are trying to create an app specific password for some other service you use that uses SSO, then the Apple's App specific password creation is not used for that. It's only to access your Apple Account from 3rd party apps.

And what happens after you log in through your employer's SSO? Does it return you to the Apple Website you were in?

I can't find anything about 3rd party SSO for login into Apple websites and services.

Apple supports SSO to 3rd party networks and resources, and while it may use your Apple account email as the basis for it, it does not affect your Apple Accounts regular log in.

Not sure if we're talking of different things here, but my account most definitely uses my employers SSO to sign in.

After I enter my work-email on https://account.apple.com/, I am redirected to our SSO-provider. I never enter any password on any Apple-site.

Yes, I am then logged in to my Apple Account and can see the "Manage your Apple Account" dashboard. Trust me, it is the way I say it is: We are using our SSO to sign in to our Apple Accounts.

I don't think this has anything to do with my issue.

Same thing happening to me.

I don't have a password since I log in with SSO, but every time I try to create a App Specific Password it asks for my password (which my account does not have and can't even set it up) and does not redirect to the company login page.

I even tried doing it from the iPhone, and sometimes when it asks for the password the face id pops up, validates me but then the website breaks and keeps looping until it asks me for my password again...

This seems like a huge oversight by Apple.

Is there really no way of creating an App Specific Password with a SSO account?
