How do I permanently delete old books in the Books app linked to iCloud?

I am running out of iCloud storage. It appears I have books that I no longer need in Books. I’m reading that there is no way to permanently delete these books from iCloud. Why? Is this a sale technique to force users to buy more storage? I hope I’m incorrect. Can someone explain how to permanently delete these books.

Remove Books from iCloud I've found lots of threads on the subject but none provide an answer. Manage Account Storage>Apple Books displays a long list of Documents and Data with many items which are NOT currently available in Apple Books on any device. Many of these appear to be earlier versions of books which have been updated. Some of these books have been Hidden and appear in the list of Hidden items, but many are not there. In other words, iCloud is taking up storage with books which are NOT available in the Books app but cannot be deleted. How can one permanently delete books from iCloud? Shouldn't there be a way to delete hidden books?

Apple Books Keeps Deleting My Books How do I prevent the Books apps from deleting (moving to the cloud) copies of my books? This is extremely frustrating as I find myself on a plane or a boat or somewhere without Internet access and my books miraculously deleted. It's not a storage saving issue because my books take up less than a GB and I've got hundreds of GB of free space. I don't see an option in settings to prevent books from being deleted. Is there a workaround to this bug?

Why are there two Apple Book files shown in my iCloud storage and can I delete one of them? Hi all, I have the same issue as per this earlier thread which didn't have any reply yet. I want to resurrect this and ask the community if anyone has any similar issue? You can delete the books that you have purchased outside of Apple's Bookstore and imported to Books and iCloud.

When I try to delete a book, that has not been purchased from Apple I can delete it from iCloud, see for example:

Just try it, but save your book somewhere else, so you do not lose it.

For items purchased from Apple's Bookstore you can just remove the download.
