I plan to be traveling overseas pretty soon and I will be using airport and other "free" wifi services. I see on the first screen of Settings a toggle labeled VPN. Is this an Apple provided VPN? Is there any reason or benefit to getting a commercial VPN?
I will need to use my iPhone to log into brokerage and bank accounts. Any opinions on how secure that is?

A VPN client is built in, but Apple does not provide a VPN.
If you subscribe to iCloud+, iCloud Private relay protects your Safari Web browsing arguably significantly better than using a free or commercial VPN would.
The vast majority of apps as well as web sites and mail servers, already use secure connections. Using a VPN to access the internet serves very little purpose other than to mask your location, and may actually make you more vulnerable to having your data stream compromised.
well apple do not give you access to a apple controlled vpn server
but you can add the vpn server you wish to use settings->VPN & Device Management
Does iOS 18 include a VPN?
