MAC MINI M4 EXternal Drives too slow - just 40MB/s

Yes, that's exactly what you read.

I have an external NVME HD with a read and write speed of 2500MB/s that works perfectly on my notebook within the nominal range.

However, when I use it on the Macmini M4 (base model), it doesn't go beyond 40MB/s, yes, that's right! The worst part is that I have an old Samsung M2 Portable HD (USB 3.0) that also has the same speed of 40MB/s, and it's too slow for reading and writing, but on the PC it works normally.

I've already formatted this NVME as APFS and nothing has changed. I got a base model with 256GB and I want to put 1TB external for cache/temp for Photoshop, Premiere, downloads, desktop, etc... but I haven't had any success.

I use 2 4K monitors (1 on HDMI and another on Thunderbolt with a Displayport cable). Even so, I disconnected everything, leaving only the HDMI one and the speed remains exactly the same.

Any ideas? Would this be a warranty issue?

It is best to get USB3 devices which support UASP for the best transfers and being able to run them on the same dock/hub without interference from slower devices. I'm not entirely sure macOS with the M-series Macs will actually take advantage of UASP....I have seen some mixed information (it is hard to confirm), but the better devices typically support UASP.

Is this an "off the shelf" drive or a DIY enclosure/NVMe combo?

For the "off the shelf", what is the brand and model?

If it is a DIY, what brand and model is the enclosure and what brand and model is the NVMe blade?

Also, what is the brand/model of the cable you are using, noting that not all USB-C cables are created equal. Notoriously are charging cables which are only required to support USB2 which is almost never stated on the cables or the packaging.

Note, if this is a DIY, note all enclosure/NVMe combinations work well on all computers. Some may work well on a PC and not work on a Mac, some work on a Mac and won't work on a PC, and some combos can just perform poorly on both.

We need exact details about your external drive (make, model, specs) ... and the cable ... and which USB port on the mini you have it plugged into. And do you have any USB 2.0/1.1 devices plugged in ... like a keyboard, mouse, etc and if so which ports?

Further diagnostics ... post a complete screenshot from System Report > Hardware > USB so we can see the details of what your Mac sees on the USB ports.

Note the front USB ports are USB 3.0 (up to 10Gbps); the rear USB ports are USB 4 (up to 40 Gbps, M4 model; up to 120 Gbps M4Pro model). But the speed also depends on the capabilities of the connected device(s) and the cables.

I'm using a "generic case" for NVME, but as I said, it works well on the notebook, which is an Acer Aspire 5

Sequoia system without antivirus or any management application. Just Black Magic to test the speed.

NVME

Brand: SK Hynix

Capacity: 512GB

Interface: PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe

Form factor: M.2 2280

Read speed: 3,500 MB/s

Write speed: 3,200 MB/s

I tested it on the Acer m.2 port and the speed is normal, so the problem is not with NVME.

As for peripherals, I don't use any via cable, I'm using a Logitech K950 Bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse 3 - the only cables connected to the MacMini are the power, HDMI and RJ45.

The 40MB/s speed is on all ports: front (which even though they are 10gbps I should have much more than 40MB/s) and the rear ones also have the same speed.

I will make another change, because I know how selective Apple is when it comes to cables (this cable came with the NVME case and I don't have the exact specifications, only that it works on another machine). I bought a new Thunderbolt 4 cable and I'm waiting for it to arrive home (it arrives tonight - I'm from Brazil)... because this 40MB/s fluctuation really seems to me to be something related to the cable that is locking the speed at 480mbps.

We'll see and if anything happens I'll let you know here!

Thanks for the help!
