iPad Safari opening random tabs on certain websites. What should I do?

Today I was searching for some resources to forward to a friend. I opened (on my iPhone) a link I had used without issue before, but it redirected to a different page. The page said I needed a different VPN, I was confused and tried to click out of it, a pop-up told me I had a virus now. I closed the tab, and tried the link again. It worked normally, but when I tried to use the webpage (this time on my iPad) alongside other web pages linked from the same source the pop-ups kept appearing. I would appreciate advice from someone a bit more tech-savvy than me. Thank you dearly.
