Apple Watch Ultra 2 pauses running workout with wrist detection turned on

Hey there!

Apple Watch Ultra 2 keeps pausing during running workout. Turning off wrist detection alone will resolve the issue, but you’ll have to do it every time before starting workout. Apple’s support team’s response to this problem is frustrating, as they clearly acknowledge the issue but choose to ignore it. They keep suggesting turning off auto pause in the settings, but everyone knows that this isn’t the cause of the problem.

Do you use the black Apple Watch Ultra 2, and which wrist band is attached?

Some users reported, that tattoos underneath the sensors will stop the workout.

I'm using the Ultra 2 Titanium model and the Ocean Wrist band when working out. The only issues I had was, that if I wear the watch not far enough from the wrist than usual, the sensor will lose the heart rate. The weight of the watch pushes it forward while moving the arms during the exercise.

Black Apple Watch Ultra 2 with Trail Loop band. I have tattoos, but I’m curious about how they affect my workout sessions. It happens only during running workouts, while Yoga or Pilates works just well.

The movement of the watch during running triggers the wrist detection to stop the workout, because the sensor somehow can't get a clear signal of your skin, due to the tattoo underneath at the time when it stopped the workout.

Yoga and Pilates do not create these kind of movements, at least that would be my conclusion, comparing those types of workouts.

Did you try to use the other wrist during a run?

Well, if this is a tattoo problem, I suppose there’s no solution that works for me because both my hands are covered. I’ll try using a different wrist next time to ensure that this happens because of tattoos. Thank you!
