How to prevent data loss when updating a 15year old Mac Pro from Pages to iCloud?

my Mac Pro won’t let me send emails or log onto the cloud. I’ve been told to close down my computer to update to a newer version (its2010) so fifteen years old, but I’m worried as I haven’t done this for quite a while, and am working on the older system of pages, that I might lose some data in doing this.

What version of macOS is running on this Mac Pro? A 2010 Mac Pro can only be updated to macOS 10.14 Mojave if it has a Metal-capable GPU, otherwise it tops out at macOS 10.13 High Sierra.

I'm not sure you will still be able to get on Mail or iCloud even if you can upgrade (maybe if you ditch Safari for Firefox ESR and Mail for Thunderbird you can get a bit more use out of it).

If you got your current version of Pages from the App Store, you may be able to update to the last compatible version of the latest macOS you can upgrade to - but if you installed it from an iWork CD or DVD, you won't be able to update.

“updating a 15year old Mac Pro from Pages to iCloud” doesn’t make sense.

Pages is a word processing and page layout application. iCloud is for cloud storage and synchronization. The two are apples and oranges.

As far as moving data from the old machine to the new one, you may find external drives with USB interfaces (including ones containing Time Machine and clone backups) to be useful for physically moving/cooying data.

If there have been changes to Pages that require some reformatting of documents created using old versions of Pages, that would be a different bridge to cross.
