Got a warning on my Mac that macOS_spyware had infected my system. Because my Mac is no longer supported, I continued my research on my iPad. It is more up-to-date. Received the same spyware warning. Believe both warnings to be a scam, but how do I remove it from my browser?

Many of these types of scams can be blocked by simply using an ad blocker. We use the free Ka-Block! on all of our Apple devices. It's available on the App Store.
Yep it is a scam and on your Mac you should be able to navigate to a different page. The website you visited was paid to display that ad. If you find you cannot navigate to a different page, then quit Safari and hold down the Shift key and open Safari again. This will clear the last visited page that showed the ad.
